48 Hour TBR Read-a-Thon

Are you like me with piles of book (or lists of books) a mile long on your To-Be-Read (TBR) list? Although I do read more than the average Jane, I don’t read as much as I would like to. I keep passing my bookshelf wanting to get some of those books read! So, this weekend I am going to limit the TV and the outings (I’ve been gone for the past week anyway and have a trip to Tahoe coming up very soon… one weekend inside won’t do me any harm), and the random errands and I’m going to READ! I’m rather looking forward to using the next few days to pick a few books off of my shelf to put in my Read-a-Thon pile.

So are you in? Come read with me this weekend!

If You’re In:

  1. Choose a few books that you will attempt to finish this weekend (Friday evening through Sunday night).
  2. Post your TBR Read-a-Thon books on your blog so your readers can see what you are attempting for the weekend.
  3. Challenge your readers to read along with you! (It’s OK if they don’t, but might be fun if they want to choose at least one book to participate with).
  4. Join the discussion all weekend long at #bookblogchat on Twitter.
  5. Post updates on your blog about what you are reading and what you have finished (full reviews can come later, but this will let your readers know what you are reading so they can either read along or look forward to your reviews!)
  6. Visit other blogs that are doing the read-a-long. Post comments and follow your fellow bloggers.
  7. Make sure you sign up here with Mr. Linky with a link to your first post so we can follow your progress!
  8. *If you don’t have a blog but want to participate: Sign up with Mr. Linky, just don’t add a website (or you can link to your Twitter or GoodReads page).*

If You’re Not In, but Want to Support:

  1. Check out the blogs that are participating below in the Mr. Linky list.
  2. Visit those blogs and leave comments and encouragement
  3. Add to your own TBRs as you see what others are reading!

I hope you’ll join in on the fun. It does not matter how many books you read (1 or 100 — actually, if you read 100 I might be so impressed that I send your name to the Guinness Book of World Records), just read! There are no tangible prizes, but hopefully being part of the community of readers and learning about great new blogs will be incentive enough.

Please spread the word on your own blog and on Twitter!

  1. What a fabulous idea!

I’m away at our cabin on the weekend with no internet access (the horror) can I still participate and post my update when I return?

  2. I typed this long response and it got lost somehow. Anyhoo, I might be able to participate here and there. I will gather my thoughts on it and take a look at my stack and be back to say Hi to Mr. Linky.

    • Oh no! I hate it when you write something and the computer erases it. Oh good! Yes, read as little or as much as you want. (and thanks about the button!). :)

  3. Great idea! I signed up with Mr Linky and have two books that I’d like to finish this weekend…and I think I can do it. In between grading papers and wrangling kittens, that is. :)

    • Me too, Carin. I think I’m going a bit overboard with my pile, but it’s fun to pick out what I would LIKE to get read in one weekend! :) Glad you’re joining in!

  4. I’m at an out-of-town wedding this weekend and my honey’s in town, but let’s see what I can pull off. I hope to at least finish The Girl Who Played With Fire, but I’ll be reading that all week since you can’t expect me to put it down til the weekend :)

  7. I’m joining the fun. I hope. I have a bad track record of life popping up and ruining my read-a-thons. Fingers crossed for a peaceful week-end!

    • Oh gosh — hopefully this weekend is smooth sailing reading. But the beauty is that it doesn’t matter how much or little you read, as long as you read! (And have the determination to try).

  8. i’d love to do a readathon but i’m leaving on vacation on sunday so i need plenty of time to pack and get the house ready on saturday. the airplane is one of my favorite places to read though so i’ll be doing plenty of reading on sunday.

  9. I’m going to join in as much as I can. My hubby’s going to be gone most of Saturday so it’s going to be just me and the boys. Then I work a 12 hr shift on Sunday (boo!). I’m going to try to find time to finish ‘A Game of Thrones’ though! The more of it I keep reading, the better it gets!

  10. I love the button. I have a weakness for reading challenges and cute buttons. lol I won’t be able to do the whole 48 hours either but I will do my best. I need to clean and shop. I have a huge TBR. This is my first time to your blog. I added you to my Google Reader. :)

    • So glad to have you, Reese! Glad you gave your Twitter name (isn’t it funny how we all know each other on Twitter but could totally walk by each other and not know? haha).

  15. Julia and Rikki, so glad to have you on board. Have already visited your sites and was excited to see what you have picked for the weekend. After seeing everyone’s list, my TBR is growing, haha!

  17. I’m in!! As a teacher I look forward to summers so that I can catch up on my reading. Unfortunately I have not done nearly enough reading this summer, so this read-a-thon is just what I need!!

I’m currently reading The Book Whisperer and am looking forward to using Donalyn Miller’s ideas in my classroom starting this fall. But I’m realizing more and more as I read that my reading habits have become somewhat pathetic in the last year or so. How can I help my students become readers if I stop reading!

Time to get back on track. Thanks for the giving me permission to lay around and read this weekend!

  18. I just signed up for the readathon but I realized I left the incorrect link…my apologies! Do you want to delete that one and have me enter it again? Maybe you could email me and let me know. I guess I was too click happy!

  19. Karen — So glad you’re joining then… maybe this will kick it off for you. I want to read The Book Whisperer too! It’s on my TBR… am looking forward to it.

Aleksandra — go for it! Start and stop whenever. :)

Jo-Jo — yes, erase whatever link you don’t want, and put up the one you do want people to visit. That way people can keep track of you better.
