What I Watch When I’m Not Reading

You may be wondering if all I do is read, read, read. Well, the answer is no. I watch a heck of a lot of TV, and movies as well. However, I don’t watch much current TV. That is, I tend to rent series that are either already over and/or many seasons in, and then I watch all of the seasons in a row. Also, I own a few TV series (Friends, Gilmore Girls, Sex and the City and The West Wing), which I watch often and take on trips with me for familiarity’s sake. Most of the new shows that I watch are 30 minute shows. Anything longer and I have a hard time keeping up with them. Somehow it’s different if they are on DVD, waiting to be watched marathon style if the mood strikes. As for movies, I’m a bit movie-ed out at the moment (if that’s possible). One of my best friends was on the SAG nominating committee for 2010, so I ended up watching heaps of movies this past year with her ,and going to screenings with cast Q&As as well (which was lots of fun, I’m not going to lie).

So, what do I watch on a regular basis, you ask?

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and ย Chelsea Lately are pretty much all I can keep up with these days. ย When I have some extra time, I’ll catch up on The Office and 30 Rock (and, about once a month, I’ll watch my recorded episodes ofย The Big Bang Theory). Other than that, I’m making my way through That 70’s Show from start to finish. And sometimes I’ll break out one of my old faithful’s from the series’ I own.

What do you watch when you are not reading?

  1. The Office, Shameless, and True Blood are my current TV loves. I’ve also been working my way through the Tudors and next I’m going to rent My So Called Life. Love movies, TV just fills my time when my book isn’t doing it for me.

    • AH, I also love The Office… watched (and re-watched) all of the seasons this winter. I still need to watch the last season of the Tudors — so addicting, but that season wasn’t out yet when I went through my craze. And I have My So Called Life in my Instant Queue right now too!!! So funny! I remember loving it so much when it was on air (and it felt like it was on longer than a season, but apparently not). Am wondering if I’ll still love it, or if I’ll laugh at it. Probably both.

  2. We don’t subscribe to cable, and don’t own a television. We have a projector and screen, a playstation, and a netflix account so that we can watch DVDs, Bluerays, and stream from Netflix LARGE like we are at the movies…well, like we are at a small art movie house from the 1980s ;) So far this year I’ve really liked Downton Abbey, Californication and um, Spartacus as far as shows are concerned. Some of my favorite films ever that I watch over and over are Arsenic and Old Lace, Some Like it Hot, Desperately Seeking Susan, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Henry and June…

    • I have Downtown Abbey in my Instant Queue. I missed it (though recorded it and didn’t get around to watching it) last month when it was airing. Really looking forward to it!

Some Like it Hot… Desperately Seeking Susan… yes, please!

  3. I love tv, but I tend to watch it on dvd. There are some shows that I must watch and so I keep up with those few, but the rest I wait until they are on dvd to watch. The ones that are on tv that I watch now are : Modern Family, Grey’s Anatomy, The Vampire Diaries, Glee, 30 Rock and Gossip Girl. And the ones I watch on dvd are: House, The Office, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, True Blood to name a few. And of course I re-watch old shows that I loved on dvd – Seinfeld, My So-Called Life, Felicity, Dawson’s Creek, The West Wing and some others. Crikey, that is a lot of tv. Its probably why I don’t get as much reading done as I should :)

    • Hahaha, I know… as I was writing the post I realized how much TV I actually do watch. I have Modern Family coming to me on DVDs (they don’t have it on Instant Queue, which I typically use) because my mom has convinced me to watch it. I’ve seen a few episodes but wasn’t hooked. Am thinking if I start from the beginning it might be better.

      • Wallace, your mom is right! You will love Mod Fam – its one of the best shows on tv right now. It is hilarious!! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do ;)

  4. I recently watched all of PBS’ DOWNTON ABBEY – 7 episodes in one fell swoop. HGHLY recommended! Used to watch CHARLIE ROSE and MAD MEN and BIG BANG THEORY but since I gave up my cable, I’ve yet to round them up on my P.C. At some point, I will though. Mostly when I’m not reading, I’m watching old movies on Netflix. I’m big on vintage. :)

  5. My taste in television is more eclectic than my taste in books (and less elitist). I adore The Good Wife, Parenthood, Gossip Girl, Top Chef, Law & Order (proper, SVU, LA, and UK), and (I confess) Celebrity Apprentice. I never manage to keep up as well with comedies, and our DVR is filled with Modern Family, Community and 30 Rock, which are great for marathon binges.

    • I do that ALL the time, Trisha. It’s my favorite way to go through a series. That or just watch a series straight through every night for two months. (Did I just out myself as being a complete dork?)

  6. I am currently watching the Battlestar Galactica remake- marathon style, The Big Bang Theory, Bones and Glee. Thank goodness for the DVR, I watch them all during the weekend!

  7. I miss both Gilmore Girls and The West Wing. I think I would happily sit through the entire series of each; they were both so much better than most of what’s out there now. Of course, what’s good now is entirely subjective–I just don’t get the appeal of The Office or 30 Rock but I know thousands, like you, love them. I’m a “Chuck” gal, myself. Love those nerd spies!

  8. Dexter, True Blood, Californication, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Tudors are favorites but I watch them like you and Trisha…marathon style on DVD :) I watched some of Sex in the City on DVD but I wasn’t crazy about it and stopped after Season 2. I caught some of Big Love while on a recent business trip and am interested in backing up and watching that series from the beginning…anybody seen that one?

  9. Oh man, I can never get enough of That 70s Show! At this point we are currently making our way through Mad Men. We just started Season 2 so we are well behind everyone else but that’s just fine with me!

  10. I’m also a series junkie. Right now I’m following House, The Mentalist, Castle, Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Glee, Community and the Good Wife.

I’m also starting Battlestar Galatica from the start and would like to take a look at Spooks in the near future.

Gilmore Girls is one of my all-time favorites :) Do you watch the US or UK The Office?

    • I watch the US Office. I tried to UK Office a month or two ago, but had a hard time getting into it… even though I know it came first AND I love the actors in it. I think I’m attached to the characters in the show and that’s what makes it so fun for me to watch. Do you watch either of them?

  11. I cannot get into The Office. I think it’s one of those shows that I will end up loving once it has been cancelled (happened to me with Seinfeld, The Wonder Years, etc.)

I LOVE Chelsea Lately! I love it when Ross Matthews, Jo Koy and Lonnie Love are on.

    • hat kind of happened to me too — I watched The Office occasionally (and even recorded it), but did not fall in love until I started from the beginning. Only then, when I knew the characters, did I finally get it.

I LOVE Ross Matthews, isn’t he hilarious?!

  12. W- you will love Modern Family! I read a lot but love tv. I watch: Zglee, modern family, 30 Rock ( love Liz Lemon), dancing with the stars, international house hunters on HGTV and kourtney & Kim take NY.

  13. Oh, I am a total TV junkie but like you I tend to gorge on a whole series at once. Watched over and over are West Wing, Buffy, Black Books, Spaced, Father Ted, Jeeves & Wooster, Coupling, Firefly, Gilmore Girls, Friends and Veronica Mars (heavy emphasis on comedy there..). Currently watching The Good Wife, The L Word, The Thick of It, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Battlestar Galactica. I also love Mad Men and have not yet started but am looking forward to Flight of the Conchords.
