Crazy-Super Fun Announcement for Free New Books:: Unputdownables Early Reader Group!
I am thrriiiillllled to announce that I am starting a new program here on Unputdownables: Unputdownables Early Reader Group.
The first book that will be featured in the Unputdownables Early Reader Group is The Gin & Chowder Club by Nan Rossiter! This book came out just days ago, and has been on my list for review. I have heard from fellow bloggers that it is the perfect summer read, so I went to Nan and asked if she’d be willing to offer up her book as the inaugural title for this new program. She said yes and the rest is history. Or, erm… history in the making. Interested in getting a copy? Read on…
Set against the beautiful backdrop of Cape Cod, The Gin & Chowder Club is an eloquent, tender story of friendship, longing, and the enduring power of love…
The friendship between the Coleman and Shepherd families is as old and comfortable as the neighboring houses they occupy each summer on Cape Cod. Samuel and Sarah Coleman love those warm months by the water; the evenings spent on their porch, enjoying gin and tonics, good conversation and homemade clam chowder. Here they’ve watched their sons, Isaac and Asa, grow into fine young men, and watched, too, as Nate Shepherd, aching with grief at the loss of his first wife, finally found love again with the much younger Noelle.
But beyond the surface of these idyllic gatherings, the growing attraction between Noelle and handsome, college-bound Asa threatens to upend everything. In spite of her guilt and misgivings, Noelle is drawn into a reckless secret affair with far-reaching consequences. And over the course of one bittersweet, unforgettable summer, Asa will learn more than he ever expected about love-the joys and heartache it awakens in us, the lengths we’ll go to keep it, and the countless ways it can change our lives forever…
Want to join the group? Fill out the form below. I will use a random number generator to choose the 5 people (make that 10, the author & her publisher opened it up to more readers!!!) who will be able to participate in this first Early Reader Group. (You must have a U.S. address to register for this one, sorry about that — will try to expand it in the future).
What’s the Catch? Well, I don’t know if I’d call it a catch, but yes there will be some requirements. First, you must be an e-mail or WordPress subscriber to Unputdownables. (You can go join now and then come back and sign up in the right hand column… I won’t mind.) Second, you must agree to post your review of the book in three places: Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and in the comments section of my review of the book on this blog. Three reviews?! Nope, you can post the same review in all places. It doesn’t have to be a professional review, just tell us what you thought of the book. And guess what — if you’ve ever ordered something from Amazon or B&N you already have an account, so it’s reeaaaalllly easy to post those reviews.
What if I don’t like the book? That’s a possibility. And if that happens, that’s ok — you can say so on your review (we keep it honest here)! But I’m choosing books that I hope my readers will enjoy. I’ve also posting a description above so you can make an informed decision. (Please don’t enter to join if you think the book isn’t to your taste.)
I’m looking forward to reading along with you! The 5 members (10 members) of this first group will be chosen on Wednesday, June 15th so make sure to submit your name before then.
***Thanks so much for entering! The Early Readers for this book have been chosen, so the sign up sheet has been taken down. Please check back again, because this will be an ongoing event (hopefully) here on Unputdownables! To be sure not to miss an announcement (and to be eligible) make sure you subscribe via e-mail. You can sign up at the top of the right hand column.***

What a wonderful idea Wallace!
I’m too busy with work right now, but will try to join later if possible. Good luck and can’t wait to hear your thoughts about the 1st Early Read Group novel
Thanks! If this one goes well, there will definitely be more so come back later.
Fun idea! I’m *booked* up but look forward to seeing the reviews.
It’s supposed to be good, so maybe another one for your shelf to ‘book’ you up even more!

Hi Rhonda! Thanks for the interest! Just want to make sure you submitted your name on the form in the post… it’s the only way to enter.
sorry meant great!!
Great idea ! What a pity I can’t join for being so far. I add the book on my TBR list/GR shelf anyway & will follow this “crazy-super-fun” adventure on your blog
That is a bummer. Glad you added it though! And thanks for reminding me… I need to mention it’s for US residents only. By the way, did I tell you I have a paperback copy of Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter for review and I can send it to you IF I decide not to keep it?
You told me you had to begin to read the Franklin’s to post a review on the 16th, yes
And your offer is SO kind that I feel quite guilty hoping you won’t like the book
I can send you a book in french if you want
Haha, I can still send it to you even if I like it! Some books I want to keep so I can lend them or re-read them, but if I know someone wants one, I don’t mind passing it along (unless I will really want to re-read it).
Hi Wallace:
This sounds like great fun! And the book pick looks great! I would be very interested since it is in my neck ot the woods!! Fingers and toes crossed re: the “generator”!
Kim
Glad you signed up! Yes, isn’t that cover great?
This is a great idea! I hope it goes well because I would like the chance to participate in future early reader groups. I will pass on this one and leave a chance open for another who would REALLY like to read this book. I do, however, look forward to seeing what everyone thinks of this story.
Yes, definitely check back in the future!
Um…I think this book is right up my alley. The second I saw the title Gin and Chowder I instantly thought of my summers at sailing camp on Cape Cod! If I don’t get to read it early…I will check it out when it is available to the public.
I thought of you too (because of Cape Cod and because this seems like your kind of book). Is Gin and Chowder something specific to Cape Cod? I thought Nan was just being creative with the title, haha!
I think I’m a wordpress subscriber… I read your blog through my blogger feedler app… But I’m for sure interested! I think the book sounds great and I’d love to participate!
Great! Did you get a chance to sign up using the form in the post? Those will be the only entries that are eligible. So glad you’re interested and thanks for following me!
Hi Everyone:
Here is my review posted:
The Gin and Chowder Club is Nan Rossiter’s first book. She is the author of a number of children’s books, including Rugby & Rosie and Sugar on Snow. The Gin and Chowder Club explores the complexity of relationships throughout different life stages.
From the title and the cover, I was expecting a book similar to The Jane Austen Book Club, where people experience life events told through gatherings. I was quite surprised when, a few chapters in, a secret affair between an “older” married woman, Noelle, and a young college bound student, Asa, becomes the centerpiece of the novel.
I found the Gin and Chowder Club to be very readable. The chapters are generally short and the story-line moves along. With deftness, the author takes on large themes such as love, infidelity, family relationships, forgiveness and spirituality.
I believe the development of the characters could have been stronger. In particular, the reader is left guessing about the issues between Noelle and her husband, Nate—issues which led her to allow for an intimate relationship with a young man she had watched grow up. However, the author is at her best in the development of Asa and her description of the feelings of first love.
Overall, The Gin and Chowder Club is a nostalgic read, perfect for vacation.
