Start Here

Hey all! We have 2 days to go to raise about $4,000 more dollars to fund the Start Here project over at BookRiot. I have copied and pasted some information about the project below, and also included the link to the official page (where you can also donate — every dollar helps!). There is a possibility that I’ll be contributing to this book, but even if not – it is very important to me that it get made! Please, please consider donating to our project. Also, if you’re up for it, would you consider sharing our project on FaceBook and Twitter? We’re in our final push and can use all the help we can get.

Thanks! xoxoxo

What is “Start Here”?

There are so many fantastic authors and great books out there that sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin.

Say you’ve always wanted to read something by William Faulkner. You probably know a bunch of his books: The Sound and the FuryAs I Lay DyingLight in AugustAbsalom, Absalom! Maybe you’ve even come close to buying one. But every time you think about it, there’s that big question:

Which should you read first?

Start Here solves that problem; it tells you how to read your way into 25 amazing authors from a wide range of genres–children’s books to classics, contemporary fiction to graphic novels.

Each chapter presents an author, explains why you might want to try them, and lays out a 3-4 book reading sequence designed to help you experience fully what they have to offer. It’s a fun, accessible, informative way to enrich your reading life.

Start Here will be available both as an ebook (compatible with Kindles, iPads, Nooks, and a variety of other devices) and as a printed edition.

Who is writing “Start Here”?

Start Here will be written by a wide array of writers, critics, and bloggers, all of whom bring not only their expertise but also their passion for these authors. This combination of passion and expertise is at the heart of Start Here. Passion without expertise is unhelpful, and expertise without passion is uninspiring.

Some notable names who have agreed to contribute: Ruth Franklin (Book Critic for The New Republic), Ron Charles (Senior Critic, The Washington Post), Jane Ciabattari (former president of The National Book Critics Circle), author Kevin Smokler, author Joe Hill and author Erin Morgenstern.

What Authors Will Be Covered?

Some of them we’ve already planned, some we’re still planning, and some of them we’ll ask for your help in selecting.

Here are some we know we are going to include: Toni Morrison, David Foster Wallace, Margaret Atwood, Charles Dickens, William Faulkner, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Philip Roth.

Here are a few we’re thinking about: Neil Gaiman, Salman Rushdie, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Cormac McCarthy, Ernest Hemingway, Willa Cather, James Baldwin, Mark Twain, Roald Dahl, and others.

Who’s on your wish list?

Where’s the money going?

The proceeds will cover:

  • editorial costs (compensation for contributors and behind-the-scenes work, software for book creation, legal fees, licensing)
  • promotional costs (cover design, PR and marketing, special giveaway items)
  • rewards & shipping (including print edition)
  • admin fees to Kickstarter and Amazon.

What if you exceed your initial funding goal?

Once we meet our target, we’ll add a second goal and five more chapters. If we meet that, we’ll add another five chapters and another goal. Basically, your support will determine if the book exists and how many authors will be covered.

Who Are You Guys?

Always books, never boring–Book Riot is a community dedicated to the idea that writing about books and reading should be just as diverse as books and readers are. So sometimes we are serious and sometimes we’re silly. Some of our writers are pros. Many of them aren’t. We like a good list just as much as we like a good review. We think you can like both J.K. Rowling and J.M. Coetzee and that there are smart, funny, and informative things to say about both and that you shouldn’t have to choose.
